Advice for At-Home Pressure Washing
Safety
When using any power tool, it is important to prioritize safety. A small, store-bought pressure washer could killed someone, and effortlessly damage your property.
Before firing up a machine, you need the proper personal protective equipment. You should put on ear protection, eye protection, gloves, and boots. If you are cleaning in a tight space or using a cleaning solution, you should also wear a quality chemical mask.
Pressure washing is dirty. Depending on what you are cleaning, you could blow contaminated water onto yourself. When we clean such areas, we have full body coverage as to not expose our skin to any harsh chemicals or particulates. However, not every home pressure washing job requires a full HAZMAT suit. Safety and pressure washing strategies vary depending on the area or item being cleaned. Check all the safety notes from your machine’s manufacturer before beginning.
Technical Pointers
High pressure doesn’t always mean cleaner. Some jobs are best cleaned with a cleaning solution and low pressure. For instance, stucco is notoriously delicate. A pressure wand can easily knock chunks of stucco off of siding. Concrete typically requires more pressure to clean. However, even concrete can easily be etched into, especially if it’s less than 2 years old. I recommend that property owners consult a professional pressure washer if they are inexperienced or unsure about cleaning a particular surface. That being said, I can offer some basic pointers.
Start washing with as little pressure as possible. You can always move the tip of your wand closer to a surface. But if you start as close as possible, you can quickly damage a surface.
Completely dry-clean an area before using water. Sweep up as much debris as possible from the area you are cleaning before turning your machine on.
Understand your particular machine. Whichever pressure washer you are using, read the instructions in full and learn how to use it before turning it on.
Research the surface you are cleaning to see if it can withstand pressure. Some surfaces are better cleaned with little or no pressure, and instead a cleaning solution and a rinsing. Some surfaces can only be dry-cleaned.
Be mindful of ordinates and laws. Your neighbors will likely file a complaint if you fire up your pressure washer at 4 in the morning. It is also illegal to allow pressure washer water runoff to reach any storm drains. If you are cleaning a space where the runoff flows to the curb, you must dam the water on your property and you can use a wet vacuum to collect this waste water. For most small, at-home jobs, this waste water can be safely discharged into your property’s landscaping. For more information, see your city’s best practices for pressure washing.
Is It Worth It?
Calculate if it is worth your time and energy. Professional pressure washers have the proper equipment, experience, and cleaning solutions to tackle large jobs quickly, and typically do a better job than a property owner with a small machine. Between the cost of the equipment, the time to prepare and clean everything, and the difficulty of the labor itself, it might be worth hiring a professional.
